Five things to watch before the ball reaches the box
From the first press to a supporting run, the most useful clues are not always near the goal.
By Moneybags Editorial ·
First, watch the shape of the team without the ball. The distance between its lines can suggest how it intends to protect space. Second, look at the player providing a passing option behind the ball, rather than only at the player carrying it.
Third, notice when a full-back moves forward and who covers the space left behind. Fourth, follow a runner who does not receive a pass: the movement may still change the defence. Fifth, observe how a team reacts immediately after losing possession.
These are prompts for watching football, not a complete tactical framework. This demonstration list analyses no current match and should not be treated as a scouting report.
